Fall in Love with summer all over again.
  1. How to Get Great Skin

    October 9, 2012 by admin

It is important to envision the body as a machine. Like any machine, the longer it runs, the more wear and tear occurs – wear and tear that often is visible on the skin. Over time, damage from sun, wind, free radicals, and pollutants also give skin a weathered, leathery appearance.

If you’re unsure how to counter this damage, OC Skin Institute wants to help. Whether you need Botox, Fillers, Peels, or Lasers, Dr. Nakhla will provide you with a customized treatment regime.

Dr. Tony Nakhla consults with many patients everyday, just like you, who are seeking solutions to wrinkles, sun spots, and damaged skin. OC Skin Institute makes the solution simple and affordable with Global Skin Rejuvenation Packages. Rather than seeing a nurse or aesthetician, Dr. Nakhla performs all the procedures himself, so you will be seeing an experienced, professional, Board Certified Dermatologist.

  4. Are Hands an Indicator of Age?

    September 11, 2012 by admin

A lot of us take care of our faces, but forget about our aging hands. Next to your face, your hands are probably the most visible parts of your body. The earliest signs of aging will show on your hands. The skin on the back of your hands is extremely delicate. This skin is very, very thin, as there is almost no fat under it at all, which is why the veins are so visible. As we grow older, any fat that is there lessens and the skin becomes dry and loose, exposing the veins even more. As if that’s not enough, we begin to develop ugly age spots and sunspots. Your hands need extra care because they’re always doing so much for us and, unfortunately, so often taken for granted. Knowing how to maintain your hands as you age is the best way to make sure they look your best and that you, in turn, look your youngest.

While aging of the hands usually begins in the 40s or 50s with discoloration and age spots, hands can begin to show signs of aging earlier if they are repeatedly exposed to the sun without proper protection. By the 50s and 60s, people may begin to lose volume in their hands making prominent veins and tendons more noticeable.

The good news is that there are preventative topical measures you can utilize to slow the signs of aging on your hands. Filler and laser treatments are also valuable options. Call OC Skin Institute today for a complimentary cosmetic consultation with Dr. Tony Nakhla: (714) 547-6111

  5. Popping, Picking, and Probing

    August 29, 2012 by admin

Please—never pick at your face with your nails, needles, or any other sharp object. This behavior is not only neurotic, but also extremely destructive to your skin. Many people with permanent acne scars have caused the scars themselves due to picking. Don’t do it.

Turn to a professional. Board-certified dermatologists and licensed aestheticians, using specialized, sterile instruments, can remove blackheads and skin debris for you. Think about it. You wouldn’t trust yourself to remove your own gallbladder, so don’t perform minor surgery on your skin.

Who among us hasn’t stood in front of a mirror and pondered popping, picking, or probing a problematic pimple? Make an appointment with Dr. Tony Nakhla, or your local skin care professional before trying to treat yourself, which may be more detrimental. OC Skin Institute has 3 convenient locations in Orange County to serve you: Laguna Niguel, Santa Ana, and San Clemente. Call us today! (714) 547-6111

  6. Food on your Face?

    August 17, 2012 by admin

This month, the pumpkin facial mask and body scrub is in vogue; next month, it may be the melon mask or apricot scrub. Products also are available that include sea salt, sugar, yogurt, avocado, kiwi—even honey.

Whoa—we’re not cooking here! We’re not looking to one-up the neighbor’s secret Caribbean rub or barbecue marinade. Why put food on your face?

If rejuvenated skin is what you’re after, talk to your dermatologist about targeted, effective treatment options. If scientifically proven, naturally derived chemical exfoliants are what you need, see alpha hydroxy acids on the facing page. If natural emollients are your heart’s desire, see Skin Commandment IV: Hydrate Holistically, located in Dr. Tony Nakhla’s best-selling book (on Amazon.com): The Skin Commandments: 10 Rules to Healthy, Beautiful Skin. 7. Practical Sunscreen Tips

    August 14, 2012 by admin

The obvious way to protect your skin from the sun is to apply sunscreen to areas exposed to the sun, especially your face, every day, as though your life depended on it – because it may. If not your life, certainly your skin and your appearance depend on it. Patients ask me a lot of questions about sun protection. For example, I hear this all the time, “I put a few dabs of sunscreen on. That should do the trick, right.” Wrong.

A study conducted a few years ago revealed that most people – up to 70% of the population – don’t apply sunscreen before going out. Those that do tend to apply only 25 to 50% of the recommended amount of sunscreen. Don’t be one of those people.

How much sunscreen should you apply? What about if you’re getting in water? What happens if it’s not sunny out? All of these questions, and more, are answered in Dr. Nakhla’s best selling book, “The Skin Commandments: 10 Rules to Healthy, Beautiful Skin.” You can purchase the book from Amazon.com.

Don’t put off protecting your skin, and the skin of your family & friends. You just may save their lives.

  8. Got Sunscreen?

    August 8, 2012 by admin

As the warm summer weather sun beams down in full swing, get a head start with proper skincare protection. With a brand new summer season comes brand new SPF rules, so take note from Dr. Nakhla, your skincare expert, about the changes in sunscreen labels, the SPF number to start with and the shadow-shade rule to live, play and sun by.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued new sunscreen label rules that went into effect this summer, and Dr. Tony Nakhla, author of the best-selling book The Skin Commandments: 10 Rules to Healthy, Beautiful Skin, said buying sunscreen is now a lot less misleading.

“For the first time,” Nakhla says, “new FDA regulations permit manufacturers to advertise that sunscreen helps protect again skin cancer and signs of aging based on key elements in the formulation of the product.”

Catch up with this recap of recent FDA sunscreen label changes:

-Sunscreens that block UVB radiation and some UVA radiation may be labeled as broad-spectrum products.

-Broad-spectrum products with an SPF of 15 or higher may state on the label that they reduce the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging

-No sunscreen product may claim an SPF above 50

-No sunscreen can advertise as a “sun blocker”

-Any claims that sunscreen products are waterproof or sweatproof must be reworded as “water-resistant”

For more information about sunscreen protection or skin cancer prevention, you can purchase Dr. Nakhla’s book on Amazon.com, or schedule an appointment at OC Skin Institute today!

  9. How can you avoid wrinkles as you age?

    July 12, 2012 by admin

What are some things you can do now to avoid pronounced wrinkles as you age?

Avoid sun damage by wearing an SPF every single day, exfoliate regularly, and treat your skin to effective products that combat skin damage. If you’re a smoker, quit. Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen and nutrients that can get to your skin cells by narrowing your blood vessels and providing more than 4,000 unwanted chemicals to your body that may damage collagen & elastin. It’s also important to eat a healthy diet, avoid regular & heavy consumption of alcohol, exercise regularly, and find stress management tools & techniques.

For more imperative information about skin care and anti-aging, purchase Dr. Tony Nakhla’s best selling book on Amazon.com:

  10. Home Remedies: A Good Idea?

    June 19, 2012 by admin

Patients constantly ask me about “sure-fire” home remedies. For instance: “Should I put toothpaste on my pimples?” “My mom told me to rub mayonnaise on my face to prevent wrinkles. Does that work?” “Does milk lighten my skin tone and help get rid of dark spots?” “If I place two cucumber slices over my eyes while I sleep, will I get rid of dark circles?”

No, no, no, no, and yet again, no.

I’ve heard them all, an unending list of unbelievable home remedies that many of my patients use regularly. Which ones are good, if any? Find out the answer to this, and so much more, in my book: The Skin Commandments: 10 Rules to Healthy, Beautiful Skin.  http://www.amazon.com/Skin-Commandments-Rules-Healthy-Beautiful/dp/1935806068/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1304551996&sr=8-1
